"Helge Guseff stellt uns für den KunstRaum/ ArtSpace einige ihrer Animationsfilme zur Verfügung. Darin thematisiert sie unterschiedliche Bereiche des modernen Lebens, wie beispielsweise das Aufeinandertreffen verschiedener Kulturen und die Konsumgesellschaft, ausgelöst durch das Wachsen der Erdbevölkerung. Wichtige Elemente der Filme sind bewegte Einzelkunstwerke im Zusammenspiel mit tiefgreifender Musik.

The three films by Helge Guseff (Babylon, The Others and The Exotics) represent these variants on
living by their chapter-like evocations of trauma, separation and wholeness. Babylon presents a
richly evocative social commentary with a well-developed artistic vocabulary. The traumas of
modernity are exposed in a powerful critique where none of us are spared from implication.
Environmental degradation, consumer capitalism, sexual exploitation, addiction, hunger, racism,
extraction, excessive technology, corruption and greed are portrayed in twenty tableaus of vivid
imagery. The Others is an insertion of powerful canvases onto bleak landscapes suggesting a
surreal intervention into the daily monotony of generic urban waste. These imaginative
cityscapes foreground the potential of the human imagination against bureaucratic sameness.
Viewers are left to contemplate the very real contributions of urban “others,” namely immigrant
populations displaced by environmental, political and economic global powers and excesses. The
Exotics conveys the potential of global intermingling with stylized humans and animals
cavorting underwater and on land in a paradise-like tableau. Their quiet presence and solemn
witnessing illustrate a potential harmony in the technicolor plants, people and environments
animated against seaside film clips. Racialized others are depicted living in harmonic
relationships and imagined tranquility.

Helge Guseff wiederum ermöglicht Einblicke in ihr Werk mit einem Workshop, der ein Angebot an Künstler-Kolleg*innen mit und auch ohne Migrationshintergrund ist. Die Künstlerin arbeitet als Medienkünstlerin und Filmregisseurin zu aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Themen und setzt sich visuell mit allgegenwärtigen Problematiken wie der Umweltverschmutzung und den Folgen der Konsumgesellschaft auseinander. Ihre musikalisch unterlegten, experimentellen Videos leben von Schwarzweiß-Zeichnungen und der Animation skurriler Kugelgelenk-Puppen, die als Protagonisten vor aquarellierten Hintergründen agieren.

Viel stärker lenkt das faszinierende Video von Helge Guseff mit animierten Zeichnungen aus dem Reich der Fantasie, in dem schon mal ganze Kontinente durch eine Sanduhr rieseln, die Richtung des Denkens. Solange
es aber noch nicht so weit ist, können auch Comics helfen, die Zeit intelligent zu vertreiben.
